In response to the recent earthquake in Haiti, Bishop Walter A. Hurley, Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese of Gaylord, has asked for a special collection to be taken up in all parishes of the diocese on the weekend of Aug. 21/22 to provide immediate relief and aid to those suffering.
Haitians are experiencing widespread devastation in the wake of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit last Saturday, Aug. 14. This disaster has left more than 2,100 dead and 12,000 injured. The country was also hit by Tropical Storm Grace just days after the earthquake, slowing rescue and recovery efforts and adding further devastation and loss.
A special collection will be taken up in all parishes of the Diocese of Gaylord this weekend to assist with the humanitarian crisis facing the people of Haiti. All funds collected will be sent to Catholic Relief Services and Catholic Charities USA to provide immediate aid and emergency support. Bishop Hurley states, “As an expression of our support and deep concern for our Haitian brothers and sisters, please be generous with your prayers and financial support. All monies collected will provide immediate emergency assistance; please give what you are able. I sincerely thank you for your prayers and generous support in the midst of this disaster and time of great need.”
