The Diocesan Communications team is creating an Advent card for Bishop Walsh to send to all registered parishioners in our diocese. We are looking for talented young artists (grades 7-12) who are interested in submitting their artwork of the Blessed Mother and Child to be the cover for this card. Check out the contest flyer.

The artistic student whose piece is selected will be recognized on the card, will be featured in an upcoming Faith magazine and on the diocesan website. Check out the guidelines for the Art Contest below, including the contest form and Art Contest License to Use Creative Content that need to be completed by the entrant and parent.  

Artist Eligibility

Must be a student in grade 7-12. Student’s family must be registered parishioners at one of our 75 parishes, or student must attend a Diocese of Gaylord Catholic school.

Accepted Mediums

Artist may draw, paint or artistically photograph the Blessed Mother and Child. The finished product will be an 8.5” x 5.5” horizontal card cover; the submitted artwork can be 8.5” wide x 5.5” tall OR 17” wide x 11” tall. Freehand painters can use oil, acrylic, watercolor or mineral paints. Freehand pencil artists can use colored or black pencils. Photographers should capture an artistic angle of a Blessed Mother and Child statue; photo can be black/white or color. Only one entry per student.   

Entry Process

The entrant must have drawn, painted or taken the photograph being submitted. The actual drawing, painting or electronic photo file must be submitted to the diocese by Tuesday, Oct. 29 before midnight to be considered. 

When submitting artwork, also include: 1. a completed Art Contest Entry Form and 2. Art Contest License to Use Creative Content. Mail or hand deliver the artwork and the completed forms to the Diocese of Gaylord, 611 West North Street, Gaylord, MI 49735 ATTN: Office of Communications.

Judging Criteria

A small group of diocesan staff will review the art submitted, looking for beautifully created, artistic representations of the Blessed Mother and Child that can be reprinted on an 8.5” x 5.5” horizontal card. 

Selection Process & Announcement

One artist’s work will be selected for Bishop Walsh’s 2024 Advent card. The parent/guardian of the selected artist will be notified by Nov. 8. All artists’ parents/guardians will be notified via email the week of Nov. 11 regarding the artwork selected for the card; all artists work will be displayed on the diocesan website and/or online communities like the diocesan Flickr account. 

Final Product

Student’s submitted artwork must be an original to them and not copied from others and grants the Diocese the right to use the submitted artwork for its nonprofit purposes. Without limitation, the diocese has the right to reproduce copies, adapt, combine with other content, distribute copies, display and transmit copies of the submitted artwork. The diocese agrees that the student retains ownership of copyright in their submitted artwork.  

Diocese Authorized Use

The selected artwork will appear on Bishop Walsh’s 2024 Advent card for all parishioners; the artist will be recognized on the card. The selected artist and artwork also will be featured in an upcoming Faith magazine and on the diocesan website and social media. All artists and their artwork submitted will be recognized on the diocesan website and/or online communities like the diocesan Flickr account. 

Key Dates

Contest begins Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, at 8 am. 

Artwork must be submitted by Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024, by midnight. 

Principals, Youth Ministry or Faith Formation Leaders are asked to notify the diocesan communications team by Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, if they have students planning to submit artwork. 

Selected artist will be notified by Nov. 8, 2024; all artists will be notified of the selected artwork by the week of Nov. 11, 2024.

Checklist for Submission

All submissions should include: 
1. Original artwork based on the accepted mediums 
2. A completed Art Contest Entry Form and 
3. A signed Art Contest License to Use Creative Content.
