Faith Rises Among the Trees

Feature

At the heart of the Cross in the Woods Catholic Shrine stands a 55-foot crucifix, designed and sculpted by Marshall Fredericks. This impressive crucifix commands attention and reverence, reminding all who gaze upon it of the enduring power of faith.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of Catholic and Christian pilgrims come to visit this cherished destination situated in the peaceful landscape of Indian River.

Established as a parish in 1946 with the iconic crucifix erected in 1954, this sacred place offers a profound spiritual experience amidst nature's beauty, attracting visitors who seek renewal and a deeper connection with their faith.

An Invitation for Reflection

With one of the largest crucifixes in the world, the shrine’s cross serves as a focal point for worship and reflection, inviting pilgrims to consider its profound significance.

The outdoor church setting enhances the shrine's appeal, providing a tranquil, open-air sanctuary where worshipers can gather for weekend Mass in the summer. Surrounded by tall trees and lush greenery, the natural environment creates a harmonious backdrop for prayer and meditation, allowing visitors to feel a deep sense of peace and spiritual connection. One of the earlier devotional spaces was the outdoor Stations of the Cross, the pathway through the woods is still enjoyed today.

Powerful Art Challenges and Inspires

Art enthusiasts will appreciate the captivating work by Timothy Schmalz, especially the recent addition titled “When I Was Hungry and Thirsty.” This artwork powerfully embodies themes of compassion and charity, resonating with the core values of the shrine and the Catholic Church.

Schmalz's other sculptures in the shrine offer a contemplative space for reflection on universal human experiences, including his rendition of the Holy Family and the shrine’s patron Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. Saint Kateri is the inspiration for The Cross in the Woods.

The shrine also offers numerous devotional spaces, each thoughtfully designed to enhance the visitor's spiritual encounter. These areas provide quiet corners for personal prayer and reflection, catering to the diverse needs of those who come seeking solace and inspiration.

The Future of this 2025 Pilgrimage Site

Beyond its spiritual offerings, the shrine features a large gift shop, providing visitors with a wide array of religious items, souvenirs and educational materials. Here, pilgrims can find the perfect memento to take a piece of their experience home, further enriching their spiritual journey.

As the Cross in the Woods Catholic Shrine looks ahead, it stays dedicated to promoting spiritual development and greeting pilgrims from diverse backgrounds, in accordance with “Norms for the Designation of National Shrines” by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

With intentions to broaden educational offerings and enhance amenities, the shrine persists in its mission to offer a holy space for worship, hospitality and evangelization. Honoring tradition while embracing new ideas, this esteemed site guarantees it will remain a beloved destination for future generations.
