Bishop Walsh Gives Consent for St. Michael High School, Petoskey, to Lay Claim to the Title “Catholic”

GAYLORD: The Most Rev. Jeffrey J. Walsh, Bishop of the Diocese of Gaylord, has given his consent to a request from St. Michael High School, a Chesterton Academy located in Petoskey, to lay claim to the title "Catholic" for a probationary period of two years. Bishop Walsh’s decision follows his consideration of materials submitted by the school, benchmarks achieved and a recommendation from the Diocese's Superintendent of Catholic Schools, who will continue to serve on its Board of Directors.

"A Catholic school reflects a commitment to faithfully carrying out the educational mission of the Church and to provide students with an authentically Catholic formation," said Bishop Walsh.

The Diocese's associated requirements include and emphasize fidelity to Catholic teaching, collaboration with diocesan leadership, strong religious education, regular sacramental life and a commitment to academic excellence.

This consent does not create any financial, legal or operational obligation on the part of the Diocese of Gaylord or local parishes. St. Michael’s High School remains an independent private school.
