Decrees: Bishop Walsh Issues Three New Decrees Regulating the Celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

October 8, 2026: The Most Reverend Jeffery J. Walsh released three decrees regulating the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. These decrees will become particular law in the Diocese of Gaylord, effective October 15, 2026—the Feast Day of St. Teresa of Avila.

The first decree relates to a few general norms of decorum in the sacred liturgy. The second pertains to “Versus Populum” and “Ad Orientem” which is the positioning, or liturgical stance of the priest during Mass. The third is guidance on the role of lay ministers at Mass.

In issuing these Decrees, Bishop Jeffrey J. Walsh stated:

"It seems appropriate at this time of our implementation of the Pastoral Plan 2026, to issue these Decrees as we come together in the Diocese of Gaylord as registered parishioners and our many visitors alike, to worship God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Liturgy is our source of unity and our bond of charity.

"These Decrees are meant to reinforce the central importance of the liturgy in our lives as Catholics and provide the clergy and lay faithful in the diocese a set of consistent norms that enhance full, active and conscious participation at all 56 parishes and 16 schools throughout our 21 counties.

"I would like to affirm each and every one of our priests in their love of the Mass and reverent celebration of it. As the source and summit'of our faith, the Mass is cherished for the powerful way it brings us into communion with God through Word and Sacrament—then sends us out on mission…we are sanctified so that we can help sanctify the world."
